Which job should I take?

I have an interview at IHOP tomorrow, but if that doesn't work out, my brother says he can get me into the McDonald's he's working at.

If I get the IHOP job i'd be a dishwasher, if I get the McDonald's job my brother says I'd be working in the grill.

They'll both probably pay min. wage, so which should I choose, if it comes down to choosing?

*I tried asking this in careers/employment, but all I got were get-rich-quick spammers.Which job should I take?
You'll hate food forever if you work on a grill at McD's. I'd rather clean dishes than risk smelling like animal fat any day.Which job should I take?
work in McDonalds if you speak good Spanish. if not then work at IHOP
Mcdonald sounds better. Imagine you washing does dishes.Which job should I take?
Go for McDonald's man. Grill is better than Dish washing...
IHOP!!!!!Which job should I take?
I worked at McD's before and haaated it. I was cleaning the lobby and that was a pain. The customers were rude and one coughed on me and, didn't apologize. I'm not trying to be a downer just, posting my experience. Needless to say, I lasted 4 days there. If you have no probs with working in fast food I say go for it! Same with the dishwasher position.
man I wish I tell ya not to take any...because those kinds of jobs suck. but if I absolutely had to pick...I would say IHOP

the grill aint fun to cover when you got a line of people extending out of the entrance (believe me...). nor is it fun to close (at wendy's it was a pain in the ***)
Take the one where you like the food best. Pancakes or burgers. I would probably take the McDonald's job.

  • What should I do about my couselor?? Shes CRAZY!!!?

Hey everybody I am having alot of problems with my couselor right now. I am a senior in high school and my couselor has been harrassing me since the first time I met her. I met her last year when she was new to the school. And I barely went to school last year.. the reason why I didn't really go to school last year was because I felt like I had a learning dissabilty and felt a lil depressed, I was going through alot at that time... But I did alot of thinking when school was about to end last year so I went to school one day and plan to ask my couselor help because I really want a high school diploma so I can get to college... and all she did was yell at me and tell me I should just drop out of school and work at McDonalds... I was really mad and she told me to bring my mom to school the next day and stay in for lunch (she has no right to keep me in for lunch) so I bought my mom to school (my mom doesn't understand English)... and all she did was yell at me for another 30mins and didn't say anything to me mom.. She was just calling me stupid and many other names and stuff like that... I guess shes a really mad/crazy person. Alot of other students don't like her but she seems to be picking on me the most... So this year (school just started on 8/25) and we got our schdules during the summer ... she only gave me 5 classes ...regualr schdule has 6 classes and full has 7 classes .. since I am behind soo many credits for not going to school for a whole year I am suppose to have 7 classes... so I was confused and made an appointment to see her ... She changed my schdule and gave me the classes I need but she didn't really explain anything to me and she actually gave me 2 science classes when I just really need one I could have replaced one of those science class with career ed because I haven't pass that yet. So I asked her if I can have 7th period for career ed because I only have 6 class at that time and she said I could just take it in night school... so I said can I get an application for night school and she said No... (COUNSELORS CAN NOT SAY NO TO THAT) I was like why? She said because you are not going to pass regular school so how are you going to pass night school... What is she talking about??? How would she know how well I would do in school? Just because I have cut alot doesnt mean anything.. I am actually a very smart person and can do anything if I really put my mind to it!! and I know sometimes its hard for me to concetrate in class but that's only if it's hella boring!!! I was really mad when she said that!! she is crazy!!! so I told one of my best friends and she got mad too because she has no right to not give me night school and me and my friends really care and wants me to graduate!! so I made an appointment the 1st day of school for night school and I had to give the note to this lady (she gives all the notes students hand her to the counselors) so I was thinking she will give me night school now since someone mightve read what I wrote on the note... so she gave me night school (I have one class for Amer Lit and US history for night school) and during that time I had US history for regular school so she told me I don't need US history for regular school since I am taking it for regular school and explain to me that American Democracy is required for 12th graders (So I have to take that)....but guess what?? She print out a new schdule for me with 5 classes (one is T.A) students behind credits are suppose to retake classes they failed and I failed alot and they are not suppose to have T.A.... T.A is for people who has enough credits and just a class to fill in if you don't need any extra class... so What the Hell?!!!! and she left out American Democracy WHEN SHE TOLD ME I NEED THAT CLASS!!! WOW SHE'S CRAZY!! SHE THINKS I WOULDNT NOTICE IT OR SOMETHING!!! %26gt;:( AND OBVIOUSLY SHE DOESNT WANT ME TO GRADUATE.....!!! omg %26gt;:'( this just makes me sooooo madd!!!!! so the next day I went to another couselor and told her that my couselor isn't giving me the classes I need when she even told me that I need it ... and she was like "yeah she told me yesterday she made a mistake on your schdule" so at that time I was thinking how can she remember she made a mistake on my schudle and why would she just go up to a counselor and tell her? Its really none of their buisness at the same time...but yea I went to my couselors office and my couselor was like "Yea youre hear to get your new schdule right?" and Im like "yeahh...." so she printed out a 'new schudle' but when I looked at it THE CLASS I NEED WAS STILL NOT ON IT !!! SO I WAS LIKE "WHERES THE CLASS I NEED? THIS IS THE SAME SCHDULE!!" AND SHE JUS TELL ME TO "GO...." WHILE SHE WAS POINTING OUT THE DOOR.. I WAS LIKE "R U SERIOUS?? U JUS PRINTED OUT THE SAME SCHDULE.. U TOLD ME I NEED AMERICAN DEMOCRACY ...!! Y ARENT U GIVIN IT TO ME??!!!" SHE US LOOKED AT ME EVILY AND TOLD ME TO GO TO THE WELNESS CENTER COS IT SEEMS LIKE I HAVE PROBLEMS... N I WAS LIKE YEA IMA GOWhat should I do about my couselor?? Shes CRAZY!!!?
i only read about half of ur question, but i got the gist of it. you should definitely tell someone in charge about her. a school counselor's job is to help students graduate and get them the requirements that they need to go into the job and/or college of their choice. she may be crazy, or she might be just extremely disorganized. she definitely doesn't sound like she cares about her job, which in that case the school board or principle of your school probably will want another person for her job. go to either one of them. if your school is like mine, the school board has a period during their meetings where people of the public are allowed to discuss issues. whomever you go to, make your case short and sweet. let them know how she is standing in the way of your graduation. if reporting her doesnt change anything, ask to be assigned to another counselor. if you can't do that, then i guess your stuck with her. try not to lose your temper with her, it will just make your problems worse. try to cooperate with her. maybe make a list of all the classes that you need, or set up a meeting with her. don't let her yell at you, just calmly tell her that you would like to discuss your schedule and not how stupid or doomed for failure you are. best of luck to you! What should I do about my couselor?? Shes CRAZY!!!?
Go to your school your principle to make a complaint or head of year..if you dont feel like explaining it write it down and give them the letter so that they can read itWhat should I do about my couselor?? Shes CRAZY!!!?
I am going to give you the answer that you really need to hear.

You should read what I write VERY CAREFULLY. It will save your life.

The problem is not your counselor.

    The problem is YOU.

And only YOU can fix that problem. You are in the habit of blaming others for YOUR problem. So start by ATTENDING your classes on your SCHEDULE.... stop worrying about getting your degree, and start WORRYING about learning how to take classes and BE RESPONSIBLE about attending them.

You will SOON FIND OUT that the world does not owe you SH*T. You only OWE to YOURSELF.

So if you want to start changing things, start by getting rid of YOUR ATTITUDE, STOP argueing with people, and START being RESPONSIBLE for taking classes.... and getting a HS Diploma will take care of itself.

If PEOPLE, including your counselor start seeing you as someone who really is TRYING, and not just PLAYING then they will TRY TO HELP YOU.

As it is, YOU ARE JUST A MAJOR PAIN IN THE ***.... and you will wind up flipping burgers IF YOU ARE LUCKY.... or HOMELESS if you are not.

Its a tough world out there.... so you better learn how to fit in PAL.

Good Luck. This is some TOUGH LOVE here.... and I hope you blow off all the idiots that advise you to FIGHT THE SYSTEM. Your only fight is with your OWN poor habits, which only YOU can change.

Good Luck.... you're lucky to be in this country... you have every opportunity to make something with you life... look at OBAMA.... you go GIRL.

    Now i'm panicking!!!!!?

Today, my mom and my step dad where asking me what my college plans are. I'm only in 8th grade. And they asked what college i want to go to. I know NOTHING about colleges. First thing that came to my mind was Stanford, UC Berkley, and all those famous names. Then i said "i don't know". But i DO plan to go to college. I mean, am i really supposed to be thinking about college at this time? Don't people usually start thinking about it in high school? Cuz, i have no idea what i want to do career wise, or what college to go to. I feel really pressured ever since they asked me that. I get okay grades right now. When high school comes, i plan to really buckle down and try my best. So far, middle school hasn't been going well because i haven't been focusing. But in high school (and the rest of 8th grade) i plan to start fresh and get the best grades i can. (1) Is it too late? (2) If i get straight A's (or really close to that) will i still be able to get a scholarship? (3) Or will it be too late? (4) Do i need straight A's all through out middle school AND high school? (5) When do i need to be possitive about my decision of where i want to go to college/ what i want to do as a career? (please answer those questions too) I'm so stressed right now, i can't stand it. I mean, i got 4 years of high school to think about it!! My parents were all like, "you need to really start thinking about it" and that most people start thinking about it in middle school. But, i'm already covered for college money-wise cuz my grandpa left me $50,000 for college money. I'm afraid if i don't choose now, i might make the wrong decision and screw up and go to the wrong college!!! And if i go to the wrong college and can't find a job, i'm going to be a hobo, or some homeless person like my real dad and i'm gonna die!! Or work at McDonalds!! AHH! My parents just put an unbelievable amount of stress on my shoulders. When i really didn't need it. As if i'm not already stressed out already, by being a teenager!! Gosh! This is making me cry..so, i'm gonna stop writing. Please answer this, thanks.|||Your 13. Don't stress yet. You've got until 10th grade to even start thinking about college (besides concentrating on getting good grades).

    1. No! Absolutely not. They only care about high school grades. So anything you have messed up on in middle school you can quit worrying about.

    2. Good grades (like i said, middle school grades DO NOT affect your gpa) and good SAT/ACT scores will certainly help in getting a scholarship. Try to aim for a 3.8 GPA and at least an 1800 SAT score or a 27 ACT score. Get into extra-curriculars and take challenging courses (AP or honors). BUT, scholarships are handed out for a variety of reasons from need-based to 6'5 tall and up to nationality to ethnicity. Just go on fastweb.com and see what I mean.

    3. It's not too late. Quit worrying. You're fine. Talk to your councelers and your teachers to make sure your put in challenging courses next year though. Make sure they know that you really want a good high school education.

    4. Almost strait A's in high school. Middle school grades DON'T MEAN ANYTHING. You can burn your report card and do a little dance because no college will EVER, and i repeat EVER look at your middle school grades.

    5. Around your 10th grade year you should start thinking about college. By the end of your 11th grade year you should have a general idea of a few schools you want to apply to and what career you want to go to. By the end of the first semester of 12th grade, you should have already applied to all the colleges you want to go to. By May 1st of your senior year of high school you have to decide on which college you want to go to. By your sophomore year in college you need to decide on a major. YOU HAVE PLENTY OF TIME.

Most people don't think twice about college in middle school. Your already ahead of like 95% of all middle schoolers by thinking about this now.

Aim for a big school. One with lots of options. You don't have to go to Harvard, Yale, or Stanford to get a good education. A big public university (UCLA, UGA, USC, UA, UF, AU... just to name a few random ones) will be your best option if you don't know what you want to go into because they have tons of majors to choose from.

In conclusion, relax. You have time. You need to see what subjects you excel in in high school to know what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Things You should do in high school:

    Take alteast 4 AP courses.

    Take plenty of honors courses.

Score above a 27 ACT or 1800 SAT.

Get mostly A's, but you'll be ok with a few B's.

Join clubs and do community service.

    Things you should do now:

chill. focus on getting good grades next year in high school.

like you said, your "ONLY 13!!!!!!"|||first of all, they don't look at your middle school grades.

second of all, there is no need to stress.

i'm a junior in college and i don't know what i want to do with my life.

right now just focus on school, get in good work habits so in high school you do well. junior year is your most important year. take your sats a few times, and start looking at colleges the summer going into your junior year. don't stress at 13. your parents just want whats best for you, but you have plenty of time ahead of you.

you don't have to have straight a's for scholarships. they have tons of scholarships out there, including ones not grade related. plus, you can get grants from the school you choose, which is also free money.|||Don't worry, You have a lot of time to be thinking about college. I didn't consider colleges until my junior year. It's always helpful to have goals during high school though so it's good you want to buckle down.

    1) It is definitely not to late as colleges don't even look at your middle school grades, only high school grades. So do well in high school.

    2) You can possibly get a scholarship if you get very good grades, depends what school you go to.

    3) Not too late, high school is the perfect place to start.

    4) Middle school doesn't matter as much, because again, colleges don't look at the grades.

    5) You don't need to be positive about what college you are going to until you apply to them which is not until your senior year in high school, so a lot of time. You don't have to be sure about your career until probably your second or third year in COLLEGE depending on your school. You can go in undecided.

Honestly, don't stress out you have A LOT of time. And it's not too big a deal, just deal with in when it comes. I think you should just do well in school and look at colleges in two years or so because what you want in a college will change by then.

Hope this helps=)|||If you're only 13, its a little early to be worried about all these things. Why don't you just do a little research every weekend and learn about the great colleges. Also work to get your grades up. You can't go to Stanford unless you have mostly A's as grades.|||No pressure there-lol.Tell them you need to research colleges and which career may be viable in the future. Some careers that were safe in the past aren't now.If they really push, say you want a green career and colleges will need time to come up with viable courses.Should buy you enough time to work out what you want to do in the future. Most important is,you should go to college.-D|||ok first calm down

youre right you have quite a few years to think about it you dont have to know all your plans for college right NOW you can think about the simple stuff like the possibilities and what you want to do what your passion is etc.

If your grades are okay then dont worry bout it you dont HAVE to have straight A's in middle school but it might be helpful if you want to get into a good high school. Besides, you dont have to go to college the moment you finish high school. You can wait like half a year or so and really think about what you want to do with your life now that your free from the worries of high school.

And dw bout working at mcdonalds there are still plenty of good paying jobs out there that dont require going to a good college

so take it easy and when the time comes you'll feel confident bout what you want to do in your future

hope i helped =]|||All of the advice from Nicoleee is correct except I'll go one step further and say that many people years out of college still don't know what they want to do or change directions and do something new after a few years of something else. Most people end up in occupations that have nothing to do with their college majors. None of this stuff is set in stone. There are no time limits. You can do a job all your life and then decide when you are forty that you want to start a whole new thing. Life is a journey, not a destination. Your parents sound like they are trying to infect you with their stress. DON'T LET THEM.|||I want you to first know that Im sure your parents didnt intend to get you this upset and worried. They just care about you and your future. It is most definitely NOT too late for you to start thinking about your college and career choice. I wouldnt start researching colleges all day everyday while in middle school, but try to focus on yourself, skills, talents, and abilities. Figure yourself out now and what you think you are good at and than connect those abilities with potential career choices. As for schools, you dont have to go to a big name school to get a great job. I suppose it helps a little; Its really about how well you present yourself and your knowledge.

If you do well in school and partake in some extracurricular activities in high school, this can contribute greatly to receiving a scholarship plus it will get you into a nicer college. Colleges do not look at middle school grades so dont worry about that. They look at your high school grades and attendance. Dont forget about that too. Dont worry if you are a senior and still dont know what you want to do. Thats perfectly fine! People go a good couple of years sometimes to really figure out what they are good at. Just like other things in life, it really is trial and error.

Another thing that should make you feel much better and keep you from worrying: The fact that you have money ready for a college. Im 22 and I have been struggling very very hard to pay for college. I have actually been out of college for 3 years now because I cant afford it and its going to take me longer to get my degree, (which I too am still not sure what that is!) You will be able to go to a good college with that kind of money and you wont have all these loans like I do. Please please feel blessed for that!!!!

Dont worry though. Gradually start finding out what you are good at, what you like and wouldnt mind doing as a career, than find yourself a college.

Good luck hun!|||i'm in the same situation too. my grades are not that good and i'm taking algebra and spanish which are high school classes so i don't know but they might look at that. after new years though i started getting pretty good grade and now i already almost have all high B's. i also once in a while look on sparknotes.com and look at the colleges in texas they have, just to get a general feel of them. at first i was worked up too but now i can get it together right before things start to really count:)|||I agree on Lanie on this one. Normally, the eighth grade is a good time to figure out what you want to to in your life in the future. I knew what I wanted to when I was in the 6th grade and when I was in the 3rd grade. Of course, you have to realize that getting into college is pretty much like getting a job. You can be the top student in your class with a high grade point average and a perfect score on the SAT. A robot disguised as a human can pull that off! But it's what you do outside of academics as far as extra curricular activities is normally what they look for in a student.

Trust me, they try to get the best of both worlds as a person when they look into a person who's enrolling in their school. Yeah, a teenage life can be troublesome, but it's better to plan ahead now because you only get to live this part of your life once.

And one more thing, Relax knucklehead! You can't think straight when your mind is in a chaotic state of mind! Just stop, take a breather, and relax! You're not the only person who's going through this.|||Wow!..that's a lot on your shoulders. I think you are right in that you have a long time to deceide. $50,000 sounds like a lot of money (and it is), but it will be spent very quicly on a college, and as you said, if you chose the wrong career, it will be disaterous. I made the mistake of getting a teaching degree..please don't make the same mistake. If I can find a job it doesn't pay well and I don't get any respect. I wish I had gone to school to do something in the medical field. Also, if you go overseas to a college, it's much, much cheaper, such as in the Philippines. Enjoy being a kid while you can. If you want to get your parents off your back, try talking to them and tell them how you feel. If they still don't listen just tell them what they want to hear. Just tell them you want to be a doctor or something so that they will get off your back. You can always change your mind later. Remember it's your life, not theirs.

    POLL: gap year or Uni?

I'm in year 12 and finish school in November. I don't know whether to take a gap year or go to Uni.

I'm not sure what career I want to take. I was thinking about a journalist but I don't think that's what I really want plus journalism is a dying career, with low job prospects and I just don't know if i want to get into that. My other thought was a museum curator, but that needs a Phd in ancient history or something.. Those are the only 2 jobs I can decide that I would probably enjoy. But I don't want to waste thousands of dollars on a degree which I will soon find useless.

Then I thought about a gap year, except I don't know what I would do during that year. I cannot afford to travel and have fun etc although that would be great. Plus, it would be kinda pointless since Id only turn 17 just after school, meaning I wouldn't be able to drink in places or go to clubs or some music festivals which are 18+. So travelling is out.

Working a low paid, crappy job like a waitress or mcdonalds or something for a whole year really does not sound appealing. What other options are there to do in a gap year?

Should I just take my chances in Uni, even though i have no clue on what I wanna do?POLL: gap year or Uni?
Travel to a country, and get a job there. Then sight see on your days off.POLL: gap year or Uni?
Go to Uni, I went to Uni after I finished year 12 and it was a very good decision.POLL: gap year or Uni?
Start off as a freshman. That's what I'm doing this October :DPOLL: gap year or Uni?
take a gap year to refresh
I don't know if it's the same in Australia, but in Canada you can go into university and take general studies or "undecided" for a year and then choose a major afterward.

I actually took a year off before I went into university, just because I was in the same boat as you; I wanted to take journalism, but realized that it doesn't have the best job prospects.

So I did the crappy jobs for a year, saved some money, and went the following year.

Can someone give me university major advice?

I am going to university in the fall. I have yet to choose my much researched courses, but every single one I researched seems doomed to leave me working at McDonald's... and Im a vegetarian, I don't wanna work there ...

Can ANYONE give me some advice? From personal experience, opinion, or perspective?

See, I'd rather have a job at McDonald's over one that has chemistry, and advanced math.

I'm pretty good at statistical math.

I'm very interested in psychology, but also in finding a decent job in it, not just to take it for 4 years and come out in something totally unrelated.

I'd have loved to be a teacher, but so do 500 000 other Canadians who can't find a spot, so I have given up on the dream.

I avidly read, and love english.

I know I will be taking social welfare and social development as one of my courses for sure, so interesting! But I can't find any information outside the university on the subject? Can anyone tell me more about careers with it?

I love earth sciences, learning about it's systems and processes

Biology was interesting, mind the little chem in it

I like the idea of helping people, persuasion, advice. Can someone give me university major advice?
Major in economics and minor in a language - one of the major international powerhouse's such as Mandarin, Spanish, Portuguese [Brazilian], Russian or Hindi.

Also make sure that you take at least one course in managerial accounting - every organization lives and dies on its budget. Many of my former students maintain that it was the single most useful course they ever took [nope - not my courses].Can someone give me university major advice?
You could be a social worker and major in social work. I don't know how that works in Canada but at my college you can major in social work.

You could go into nursing. That has some psychology and science but mostly helping people.

Pick something you love, and don't worry about what jobs will come out of it. If you are truely passionate about something, you will end up at a job you love too.

Maybe you could get your master's in psychology and be a school counselor/psychologist? again, I'm not sure of the requirements for a school counselor in Canada, but you should look into it.

good luck :)Can someone give me university major advice?

    Hi Megan!
    hi,

You should try this web site

As far as I know they are the best college finder online, and they are free(no hidden charges).

    I think this will help

Community College + Transfer or Military?

I am about to enter my junior year in high school and I have a 1.5 cumulative grade point average. I do consider myself to be a highly intelligent, organized, and articulate person. But I had my priorities mixed up freshman and sophomore year and went through lots of personal issues. I would love to go to college, but fear that I do not have the GPA to attend a 4 year university out of high school.

You are either a person who goes to college, community college, military, or you do nothing with your life after high school and hope that you land a good job through work experience.

I don't have the GPA to get accepted into a university (2.8 for ECU) so that leaves me with community college or the military (or McDonalds lol). I could go to community college and try to do well there, and then transfer to a university after 2 years, or I could enlist in the military. I have considered the Navy and Air Force for their good technical training which can look pretty good on a resume if you pick the right field (such as Information Technology). But I feel a calling to serve in the infantry so I would enlist in the Army with an 11x option 40 contract which guarantees me a shot at becoming an Army Ranger.

Would going to community college and getting my GPA up there and then transferring to a university and majoring in something be a reasonable, safe, and reliable plan? If so how hard would it be and would this be less or more costly than going straight into a university out of high school?

Or should I strive to become a Ranger and serve for 4 to 8 years, then get a job in law enforcement such as SWAT, take college then (using the GI Bill to pay for it), then do whatever I major in?

I could also make a career out of the military. If you serve for 20 years you can retire, that means I could retire at the age of 38 and receive monthly pay checks, if I were to serve 25 years then I would get 25% more per month. If I were to serve in the Army that long, I would shoot for Special Forces, that alone is like going to college, they are highly trained in politics and the Army also teaches you a foreign language (35,000 dollar bonus per year on top of SF bonus, Airborne bonus, EOD bonus which is 45 grand a year, and diver bonuses). Does that sound like a good plan?

So to break it down, I could go to CC then transfer to a university and live life. I could serve in the military for 8 years, then get a job in law enforcement and use the GI Bill to go to college then get a job in the field I majored in or continue with law enforcement, or I could make a 20-25 year career out of the military, retire at 38 or 43 and live pretty comfortably.

    Which would you do?

    * 0.3% of troops who get deployed die, so I'm not that worried about that, especially if I was in an elite special operations group such as the Rangers or Special Forces (aka Green Berets)Community College + Transfer or Military?
I would go to CC then transfer to a university really It's pro ably the best option I don't know much about the USA but in the UK if you are educated at a university you will enlist as an officer without having to just be a grunt first in fact most university's have ROTC (royal officer training core)associated with them which you can join and will mean when you leave you won't ned as much training any way that's just me but I wouldn't join the armyCommunity College + Transfer or Military?
If you're interested in the military then just enlist.Community College + Transfer or Military?
Why not raise your GPA? You seem mature enough to put in the time, you have 2 years and good grades would raise it alot.

Over 6 years have now passed since I graduated with a bachelors in degree in history and I find myself applying for the same low wage positions as I did 6 years earlier. I applied for McDonald's and a records clerk position today and McDonalds pays 7.50 an hour and the records clerk position pays 10 dollars an hour. Can I conclude with all honesty the degree was a waste of time and money?

-I live in the Dallas area

-I have a good resume in which I tailor it to different employers I apply to

-I do cover letters for jobs I apply for

-I've gone back to my university's career center. They're a waste of timeOver 6 years have now passed?
You took a personal enrichment degree that was never meant to lead to a job unless you get a PhD.

Before the early 20th Century, a four-year college degree wasn’t meant to lead to a specific job but for personal enrichment, intended to turn you into a critical thinker for a career in public administration, the clergy or business where you would learn on the job

The following are considered “personal enrichment degrees”:

    Anthropology

    Archeology

    Art

    Art History

    Creative Writing

    Classics

    English

    Film

    General Studies

    History

    Humanities

    Interdisciplinary Studies

    Journalism

    Language %26amp; Culture

    Liberal Arts

    Literature

    Political Science

    A language

    Media

    Music History

    Paleontology

    Photography

    Philosophy

    Sociology

“Anything” Studies %26amp; basically anything you get a “bachelor’s of arts” in

There are far more grads than jobs in these. You can have a good life with one of these degrees but the job market does not value them highly:

    http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2010/pf/1…

This is not to say you will not get a job but odds are that your job will not be related to your degree %26amp; may not pay as well as some other majors.

I’m not saying we should all be engineers, economists or doctors. But society is voting that way with its money

With a degree in the above %26amp; a GPA over 3.0 you can:

    1. Get into law school. However law schools today graduate far more lawyers than needed, thus depressing wages.

    2. Pursue a master’s in a field with a defined career path, for example business administration, social work. Hopefully such a program will not require many prerequisites you do not have. A graduate degree is more valuable than a second bachelor’s degree.

    3. Go to grad school in the same field %26amp; earn a PhD so you can become a college professor. However, there are far more PhD grads in some fields like Philosophy than there ever will be any kind of faculty positions

    Or with a lower GPA

    4. Take a K-12 teaching qualification, which is usually 2 more years, so you can teach your subject at a public school

    5. Look for a job in fields where they want you to have a degree, any degree. Where they want the degree because they want people who have proven they can stick with something difficult. There are more jobs like this than you may think

    6. If you join the military you are more likely to enter as an officer instead of enlisted personnel

What is an English major supposed to do after college?

    http://www.publicradio.org/columns/prair…

    Information on every major:

    http://www.mymajors.com/

This link considers certain degrees useless as the number of jobs that will be created in the field up to 2018 is less than the number of graduates in one year in that major

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/galleries/2…

Here is a listing of the average starting %26amp; mid-career salaries for most 4 year majors. Note that these stats only apply to people who actually got a job in their field. Many graduates in the lower half of the list never get a job in their field %26amp; are not counted.

The higher they pay, the harder the major %26amp; generally the more math they require. Just be aware that high pay does not mean high demand.

But on the bright side, if you have a genuine interest in the field you are pursuing %26amp; are willing to throw yourself in it %26amp; do anything for it, you will fare better than someone doing something because they can’t think of anything better to do. Those with a real passion for something can move mountains to become successful, but if you don’t have that fire in you, you are at a disadvantage.Over 6 years have now passed?
I have a B.A. in History as well. Did you not get a teaching certificate to go with it?

    Here's your options:

    1. Get certified to teach (Go back to school for 1.5 years plus student teaching)

    2. Get a substitute teaching certificate through the state (You'll make more than McDonald's)

    3. Get a certificate in paralegal studies, which would go nice with your B.A. in history (about a year of school but job market openings are in demand BIG time.)

Could some please help me change my life for the positive??? Please read and help if you can. Thanks?

I am enrolled in university of Phoenix for psychology. I basically did this so I could stay at home and earn a degree. I did this because I thought it would help with my future, but I am seriously second guessing it. I have been slacking and I had a mid term exam today and I didn't know a single thing on it. I just didn't do it. I am debating dropping out because I don't even know if it will be worth anything in the end. I have been so depressed lately. All I do is play video games. I live at home still and my girlfriend lives with me. I do other things besides play xbox, but I seem to be an extremist. So I play alot of xbox. I don't drive. I have never drove. I am 21. I am a floor supervisor at mcdonalds and my girlfriend is a manager there. I drink all the time. I am losing most of friends because I don't really party like I used to. I sit at home and drink instead of going to the bar. I feel extremely unheAlthy most days because I don't exercise. I am over weight and I drink alot of beer. I have been so depressed lately and nothing seems to be fun any more. I spend most of my very small paychecks on video games and beer. I only work 2 - 4 days a week. I am kind of social some days but I do not do well with public speaking. I want a new job but I don't know what to try for. I want to work for a counseling job. Teens or drug abuse, but i don't know about that anymore because I seem to have no interest in the psychology course I am in. Half of me thinks it is the depression and the constant videogames. I don't even know why I am posting this really... I just need some advice. My mom and girlfriend do not know what to tell me. I have a really nice life but I seem to be depressed all the time. Could someone give me some advice on how to change my life for the positive please? Should I continue with the online school? Would it land me a counseling job? Or would employers laugh at my online degree? Should I persue a career in technology or writing? I enjoy both of those too. Please give me some advice on my lifestlye or my career plans or both. Your time would be greatly appreciated. ThanksCould some please help me change my life for the positive??? Please read and help if you can. Thanks?
You need to break the video game habit by replacing some of the play time with exercise. Cut back the beer or just stop drinking for a few weeks and challenge yourself to go healthy. Eat lots of vegetables, lean meats (unless you're vegetarian) and fruit for snacks and drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Start your day with a bowl of cereal.Eating healthy and drinking water. will give your liver a break and repair it to it's former glory and you will have loads of energy.

You need to look after your health before you can expect your brain to function properly for you to study and stuff. Get off your butt and get moving and you will feel great in no time. The first few days are the hardest but then your body will thank you by giving you heaps of energy and you will also look better and think clearly, Give yourself a chance. You are stuck in a miserable hole and in order to get out you need to do the work so get to it you can do it.Could some please help me change my life for the positive??? Please read and help if you can. Thanks?
If you can't get your money back, you might want to finish the semester, but you should probably try to attend a community college after that. The University of Phoenix is a for-profit school and it is best to avoid such schools.

I think that you need to see a counselor. The beer and the video games are making you more depressed. You should be able to meet with a counselor at your community college even if you are not currently a student there. He/she should be able to help you explore some possible careers. He/she should also be able to refer you to a counselor who could help you with your depression.Could some please help me change my life for the positive??? Please read and help if you can. Thanks?
Show me your friends and I'll show you your future.

You sound as if you are wasteing your time currently pretending to take college level course. You do recognize that you spend way to much time and money on the idiot boxes. It's animation, not real life. You are making some folks filthy rich staying hooked on their gear. Stand up un plug it for a while, then when you absolutely run out of something to do for yourself, play a little on it. That stuff is ruining the younger generations.

If you are patriotic go see a recruiter, the military may have a need for your dedication to a computer monitor. They can help advance your education. Go see the world for a while.

Don't be a whiner, get up and do something about it. I am and I would trade places with you if we could. I can't do near the things I did when I was your age, and that bothers me. I was a Corpsman during the Viet Nam war, I made a difference.

    Job application help?

    To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Timothy Glen Vaughan and I am applying for this job opportunity, because I believe that your business will be a great career opportunity for you as well as I. I like the friendly and helpful atmosphere of your business which has sadly has became a rarity. I believe that I bring many good qualities to the table that can be useful to your store as and that I can gain many things from this career opportunity.

I believe that I could handle the responsibilities whether it is as a stocker, cashier, or bag boy without many altercations. As I just said I would be happy with whatever openings you have at this time and will do the job with all of my effort. I was brought up to be a hard worker and not slack off. I have stayed active and helped the community through many clubs and organizations, I have been a member of 4-H, FFA, BPA, FCA, and have participated in chorus and football throughout my high school years.

As you will see from my resume, I have previous business experience from my time working for McDonalds. I have worked on farms since I was 12 (driving tractor, hauling hay, cut wheat, etc.) and thanks to these opportunities I have learned the meaning of hard work and will not show laziness in my work

I hate my job! help please!!!?

    its a little long...

My job is so unbelievable. you should see the idiots I work with:

First, there is this supermodel wanna-be chick. Yeah, okay, she is pretty hot, but damn is she completely useless.

The girl is constantly fixing her hair or putting on make-up.

She is extremely self-centred and has never once considered the needs or wants of anyone but herself.

She is as dumb as a box of rocks, and I still find it surprising that she has enough brain power to continue to breathe.

The next chick is completely the opposite. She might even be one of the smartest people on the planet.

Her career opportunities are endless, and yet she is here with us. She is a zero on a scale of 1 to 10.

I'm not sure she even showers, much less shaves her "womanly" parts.

I think she might be a lesbian, because every time we drive by the hardware store she moans like a cat in heat.

But the jewel of the crowd has got to be the *****.ing stoner. And this guy is more than just your average pothead.

In fact, he is baked before he comes to work, during work, and I'm sure after work.

He probably hasn't been sober any time in the last ten years, and he's only 22.

He dresses like a beatnik throwback from the 1960's, and to make things worse, he brings his big f*cking dog to work.

Every ******* day I have to look at this huge Great Dane walk around half-stoned from the second-hand smoke.

Hell, sometimes I even think it's trying to talk with its constant bellowing.

Also, both of them are constantly hungry, requiring multiple stops to McDonald's and Burger King, every single f**king day.

Anyway, I drive these f*cktards around in my van and we solve mysteries and ****.

what are some good careers to get into ?I hate my job! help please!!!?
Scooby dobie doo where are you?

What would be a good job?

Ok, so in about a year I will need to be getting a job; I just turned 15 less than a month ago.

As I said before, I am 15. I am in the top... 5 or 6 percentile of my class, I have some experience in Computer Programming and Computer Maintenance; I take AP classes, I'm in Band (thus I have good time management..), and I have looked into technology careers, and think a good career for me would be Software Engineer (not at the age of 16.. of course), and I was wondering what a good job for me would be.

If I had to work at a place like Best Buy, I would, I would rather work there than somewhere like McDonald's. Also working in a customer service area or something similar (like Geek Squad, but I highly doubt it) would be preferable to working at a checkout area, but I guess at my age I don't have a stockpile of choices.

Thanks. What would be a good job?
i have to tell ya you do have ya head screwed on right. and i think you know what you are after. like any kid its hard to break in to the work force unless you know some one. what the employer sees first is if you are alert, you speak well no less no more. show ambition. but not overly.don't thank him or her but once when leaving the interview. smile. go after what you want to do. and actually best buy sounds interesting theses young people are damn smart. go for it.

please make suggestions and please be criticalHelp with this cover letter?
    Timothy,

Sometimes you appear negative in your words. For example, don't say that the friendly and helpful atmosphere has become a rarity. Instead say something like "from what I have learned about your store it is an inviting and employee friendly and a nice place to work. I would be very interested in a position there."

Don't say "as I just said" - this is a short letter, not a novel. The person reading it probably didn't forget what you said a few sentences ago.

If you have enclosed your resume just give a brief highlight of it. Use the cover letter to convey information about you that isn't listed on the resume - the fact that you are active in your school and community, for example, probably isn't on your resume. Highlight it here.

The cover letter is to get the person interested enough in you to read your resume. Here's the one I used to use when I was searching for jobs (or something like this):

Dear (actual name of the person - I find out by calling the company):

Please accept the enclosed resume in response to your ad in Sunday's newspaper. I believe I have the skills and abilities that would make me successful in such a position.

{here is where I would higlight something about myself that is listed in the ad - if it says must be computer literate I might say "I have ten years experience working with various Microsoft Office products and consider myself competent in their use" or a variation thereof.

I would appreicate the opportunity to meet with you in person and discuss the requirements of the position in more detail. You can reach me by phone at 555-1212 or by email at _____.

    Thank you for your consideration.

How do you feel about the previous generations?

I am talking about people who are now 30-50. I myself am 19, but I am an old soul mature guy and I my best friends are in their 30s and of course they have all the good jobs and everything. I always feel jealous of them because it was so much easier to start a career or go up corporate ladder in 70s, 80s and 90s. And now I am at about the age where I am supposed to be starting my career but with all the economy recession bullshit, it's totally impossible to even get a descent job because all the people with years of experience who got laid off are looking for same kinda jobs. I feel it's not fair that the previous generations had it so much easier.

On the other I am joining the military as Info Systems Technician, so I don't really care about the rest of the job market. But seriously if not for the military, I would be stuck working at mcdonalds or some crappy warehouse. How do you feel about the previous generations?
Like hell the previous generations had it easier. Were growing up now with virtually no chance of a World War. Sure weve gt an economic crisis but again there was a massive one on 1930 (where it was even worse, there was literally no FOOD than money) and to a smaller extent in 1990 when the Japanese economy temporarily retracted and electronics and technology spiked heavily, there was a massive shortage of computer stuff during that year.

Also back then life was crude, technology was in its infant stages and human rights /racism was rampant across the globe within their respective countries.

I certainly dont consider them lucky, but i dont consider our generation lucky either. We do have to inherit global warming and the increasing problem of globalisation but in comparison to past generations its not as bad as the problems they faced in their hayday/How do you feel about the previous generations?
Some things were better, and some things were worse. At least now a lot of people have computers to complain on.How do you feel about the previous generations?
Well I am in the "previous generation" and I never had an easy time in the work force, even in the military. I have never had a job that I could sustain myself on, and still don't. After 21 years of marriage, I am suddenly getting divorced, getting screwed on the divorce and homeless and jobless and I am going to have to find a job and a place to live. Despite everything, I will be competing with you for the same jobs, and the same pay. The salaries I can expect are only 2.00 an hour more then when I started working at 17-years-old. I don't have the hope of a decent job, I am just going to take any job I can get and hope that I can survive. The military is a good start for you. Be all you can be and then get out. Give yourself a 50.00 a month allowance and bank the rest of your money so you can start your own business when you get out. Go to college and put money aside for college because you really need a degree, any degree to survive. Don't buy a fancy car or truck, save your money and worry about that when you get out. P.S. McDonald's is one of the best employers I ever worked for. If you work really hard for them, they pay really well, but only if you work really hard for them. They are very fair and your raises are based on how hard you work. I got good raises when I worked for them. I wish I didn't have a leg injury, I would go back to work for them. Once you get into management the money there isn't bad. Good luck to you, chase your own dreams. How do you feel about the previous generations?
yeah the previous generation weren't the smartest! they should have maintained more of a balance in the world, i agree with everything you've said i am in the exact same situation to but im not the military type so im on the benefit i cant even get a warehouse job and i have a degree and some experience within IT as well. They pumped out to many kids/ used to many resources etc and to that person who commented that they went through wars etc they made those wars and fought and they their beds so they had to sleep in it. They were a selfish generally really with no though of the coming generations, but we are more developed and potentially smarter as a whole so generally more advanced, there's just to many of us.

Do I have what it takes to be a doctor?

I used to want to be a professional singer/lawyer when I was younger. I really thought I had an amazing voice, but it's just normal. It doesn't sound too terrible, but it's not enough for me to make a living off of it like Beyonce or Rihanna do. As for the lawyer thing, I probably could do it, but I just grew apathetic towards that career. In other words, I just don't want to be a lawyer anymore.

Now, I think about becoming a doctor or some sort of medical scientist in a lab. I even joined a Medical Sciences Academy at my high school. In my class (Health Science 1) I have a 97A right now. I got 98% on the midterm. In the first two terms of high school, my final grades were 98%. I can attain straight A's on my report card, although, sometimes, I receive a B or two every now and then. But, my parents don't have enough money to pay for medical school. Plus, working at McDonalds until I get my degree to practice medicine certainly won't be enough to pay my student loans. Can I still be a doctor or something like that?

I'm only asking this because I don't want to end up doing something to embarrass myself. (e.g. To pursue my potential "singing career," I auditioned at a school of the arts. I wasn't accepted. It was like American Idol; there were three judges. And I was the person who thought she could sing extraordinarily well when in actuality, she didn't sound that wonderful)Do I have what it takes to be a doctor?
It sounds like you have what it takes. Just make sure it's what you really want to do. You should never give up on your dreams. If you want to be a doctor though, go for it.

I have a question for girls?

    Would you rather...

Have children and live a stereotypical family life. Go to church (if you're religious), visit the family every christmas, punish the children when they're bad, be a housewife, cook (nice food), clean, and all the things a housewife does while your husband works a high paying career. You're busy and there's enough money, but not lots of money.

    Or

Live a more free life and not be bound by obligations. Not be tied down to anything. No marriage or kids. Live in a modern house with solar panels, a balcony, nice view, modern kitchen, you know... Travel the world visiting all continents, from antartica to africa, from asia to canada. More going out, more fun, a longer life (because no stress, healthy eating, enough sleep, enough time to exercise and play sports.. Things that would be hard to do have if you had children. Not saying you can't have that, but having children usually is stressful, time consuming, sleep depriving. Pregnancy itself is painful, fattening, and can be life threatening. If it doesn't kill you, I think it probably took some years off your life.... Partying, seeing friends, nice car, and a lot of money. Your boyfriend has a high paying career, and you work part time simply because it gives you a little extra income to buy a tastier turkey or nicer wine... Or whatever. Your job is stress free... Like a dance teacher or something. Not mcdonalds or something like that.I have a question for girls?
the second one sounds nice...but empty...you need kids to fill your life, the second one maybe do that for the first year then settle down bring kids and make a family, when your old you wont be able to do all that, you want to settle down and have stories to tell....your grandchildren trust me just seeing your kid graduate is worth the second one and more...money comes and goes but with a job everything is good...I say wait a year doing the second and trust me you'll have a thirst for the first...a life is empty if you dont have a family...so I say the first one.I have a question for girls?
its hard to choose, i need kind like middle option, but if chose from what's given i would pick the bottom one! because i love traveling and would love to live in like the city in an apartment and have a really fun job and boyfriend!I have a question for girls?
Option 2 but with adoption!I have a question for girls?
Terrible ultimatum. Your options are not that great. I don't want to be bound my the mundane aspects of life, but I don't mind relationships.

Spiritually speaking: Is someone with a physics phD making 20$/hour underpaid?

They work for a government research lab, and have no hopes for raises/promotions in the next 15-20 years of work. They did 10 years of schooling after high-school (4 years undergrad, 2 years masters, 4 years phD) and they are in a ton of debt. Would you say that this person is underpaid? What other career opportunities do they have? The embarrassing thing is, his brother who is a Mcdonalds manager and only with a high-school diploma, earns more than he does as a physicist.Spiritually speaking: Is someone with a physics phD making 20$/hour underpaid?
    Yes, I'd say so.

As I recall from my days living around DC, a Ph.D. should be able to qualify for at least a GS-12 Federal job. As you can see here, that means the base pay from day one is $60K, and due to various adjustments it's actually well above that.

    http://www.fedjobs.com/pay/pay.html

Now admittedly, GS-12's don't open up that often. But I think you qualify for a GS-9 with just a Masters, and there are lots of those.

Now I suspect when you say "government" you don't mean the US federal government. I'm just throwing that out for comparison.Spiritually speaking: Is someone with a physics phD making 20$/hour underpaid?
Cooking eggs in bacon grease makes them less healthy, but more tasty.

Bacon does that - makes things tasty.

As to the whole "underpaid" thing, if there is enough money for a person to procure tasty potato soup, then they aren't doing too badly.Spiritually speaking: Is someone with a physics phD making 20$/hour underpaid?
I think a more important question would be what it says about our society and what most people tend to value. But to answer your question... yes... VERY underpaid. And btw, I'm not buying the story that a PhD Physicist makes only 20$/hr and has no prospects for improvement. It sounds very much like you're trying to talk yourself out of an education. So forgive me but I'm calling BS on your post.

  • Lacking direction/motivation? ?

    Ok, really long, but...

I've always been really inspired by movies about sucess stories, like the pursuit of happyness, where people work really hard and become a sucess.

I'm only a junior in high school, but my whole life I've worked as hard as I can for that. I'm a really smart kid and ive always gotten straight As, and it's usually pretty easy for me. I work really hard to do all the work, but I find it all really easy and pointless. I also tutor eveyday after school an work at McDonalds (which I absolutley hate) to save up for college so I can be successful in life and what not.

The thing is, I feel Like i'm in a rut because I don't know what I want to do. I hate the whole school thing because I feel like I'm not learning anything and nothing of value, I honestly don't want to go to college even though I'm really smart. But none of the collge degree white collar jobs seem appealing to me AT ALL. I really don't want to live in suburbia the rest of my life doing something I'm not passionate about. That's what I'm doing right now. I'm not opposed to hard work, I just want to be doing something I'm passionate about in life. I have no idea what I want in life or what to do

In all those movies about sucess, the person is always working hard because they have something to motivte them, like they are extremely poor, or want a better life for their kids, or want a career doing something they are so passionate about

What career should I go into? Should I even go to college? I don't know what I want because I have absolutely no direction in my life. I don't know if I should continue my job since I don't even really HAVE to work, I hate it but I've always just felt it's important to be working if you can and to try your hardest, I just don't know what to do right nowLacking direction/motivation? ?
So many people feel like this, and it is seems such a waste. I didn't know what I wanted to do, and nothing much interested me before I went into college either. But there I found a subject I liked and a different world.

Part of it, I am sure, is that when you are young and in school you are expected to just be passive and soak up what is given to you. That is your job, to learn, like a sponge. Not to create, not to decide, not to analyze and evaluate or build a life. It is a deadening experience for people who are coming into maturity with developing talents and skills and ambitions and can't find a use for them. You should know that you are in probably the most difficult period of your life now.

College might transform your life as it did for me. I can't emphasize enough to go to a really good university that is respected for its academics. The learning atmosphere is very much different than in high school and I was amazed by it. You might find a subject that inspires you. I had little interest in most of the courses but when I took geology a light came on for me and I found it fascinating. When you can submerse yourself in a subject it provides a new world for you. Take courses in a wide variety of areas, search for something that captures you.

Or maybe you are not really an academic at heart and won't find interest there. There is no certain path in life for everyone to follow. Think about such things as being an EMT or a translator or working with animals in some way. Or what would it be like to start a business and work to make it grow. This might be too much for you right now, but there are lots of ways to live, and you need to keep your eyes open, look for things that interest you, and be willing to explore and take some chances.

    Good luck, my friend.Lacking direction/motivation? ?
Go to college. Whatever you do, go.

Although your major- That's really hard to say, considering none of us know anything about you.

If you don't have any passions, I would just go for something that's in high-demand.Lacking direction/motivation? ?
If you have a community college around your area, I'd advise you to go to one. If you don't have a community college near you, come to California by yourself and financial aid your way through two years. Community college in California is like $26 per unit as opposed to $500 per unit. Explore your options by taking a bunch of eclectic classes, and find a nice place to live and be an adult. I think that's a pretty awesome option.

I'm offering you a specific prescription because I think you shouldn't waste thousands of dollars on a gamble in a university. Plus, Southern California is paradise with really great transfer options like UCLA. Dang! I sound like a brochure.

Or you can join the army, which will totally pay for your education. I don't really know what else to tell you.

What is the best way to convince an Employer I plan to stay with them for a while?

When I am on an interview I know the biggest concern the Hiring manager has is whether they are going to invest to train this employee just for him to leave in 3 months. I myself know that it costs 3000 to train a person to work at Mcdonalds. i am guessing that even before I get the interview they scrutinize my job history to determine if hired whether it is an interest or just looking for a paycheck. Based on my last 3 jobs. I worked at McDonalds for 5 years. I worked at Wal-mart 18 months and Target 6 months. I would say that the applicant is probably not happy in Retail however enjoys food Service. I am also going to college for Culinary Arts. I usually feel saying I am going to College is a bad idea however I think it would be a big Plus if I am applying at a job that I need to work with food. If I was hiring a person for a Restaurant I am more convinced the Applicant is going to stay if he is going to college for my industry. Many times I have interviews at Supermarkets and when asked why I want to work there I dont say why I want to. Culinary Degrees are valuable in many areas not ust a restaurant. I also understand that Food service workers are a most sought after laborer. I know most Employers are willing to train a worker if they know he is looking for a career . I know many skills employers would rather train. I at the moment am studying 13 languages at home. I posted on a resume that I was studying them and Employers responded. I know Employers read my resume . There is a difference between Studying and Fluent. I also know when an Employer sees a person is studying multiple languages they are considering the person has a strong passion for languages and would be worth investing in. I have a strong Aptitude for languages and would really love to have an employer invest and encourage me to build those skills . When I was working at Wal-Mart as a greeter I was many times told not to use my talent. That is the reason why I prefer not to work in Retail. I learn so many skills that are valuable to employers and when employers hire me they dont put them to use. I type 90WPm. I am willing to relocate anywhere preferably internationally. i would enjoy working with hazardous chemicals. I am willing to work 24 hour shifts. I like working 2nd and 3rd shift. I really want to help come up with strategies how to cut costs, lower turnover, and raise sales. I never get the opportunity to do anything extraordinary. I enjoy being around foreigners. I dream about living somewhere exotic like China, Russia, Brazil, india,or Turkey. If I was at a job that was being sent to China or India I would be asked can I be sent with it. I am willing to manage a store for 7.25 an hour. For me money is not why I want a job I just want to feel I am being a productive member of society. I am proud to pay taxes because I am contributing to society. What is the best way to convince an Employer I plan to stay with them for a while?
The biggest concern an employer has when conducting interviews for job openings is whether or not you can do the job. If you can't even tell an employer why you want to work there, then obviously you aren't going to get hired.

If your interview is anything like your question, don't count on the job panning out. Much too much information and far too wordy. I didn't even read past the first three or four lines.

I don't have a clue what career I want to go down?

I have no idea what I'd like to do as a career!

I am twenty years old living in the UK, hoping to move within the next few years to one of the British Commonwealth countries to live and work for a while with my American girlfriend (who is living in the USA as well atm).

I am currently studying music and just got my diploma in music performance. I am going on to do a foundation degree in it, starting September but am worried. I realised that there is very little in the music business I like, and the things I do like make very little money. The only sector in the music business I enjoy is the performance side of it, but even that I don't enjoy that much. I am a very introverted person, and play music for enjoyment. When I am forced to do it just to make money it takes all of the fun out of what I am doing.

Putting that aside, I do not have any other clue what other field I could go into and study. I feel so lost and scared!

I know what I want in life. I just want to live with my girlfriend peacefuly, maybe a small family, caring for them, loving them...but everytime money gets added to the equation my life becomes turmoil, and Im not even living with my girlfriend yet! I know I have to work though. I also feel, we only have this life, and I don't want to be one of the majority of adults who spend most of their lives working, just because they have to make money.

Sure, if there was something I really loved doing, then my life wouldn't be being wasted, and I'd be earning the money to support my girlfriend and family at the same time, but at the moment I have no clue what this could be!

As I said, I have a music qualification. I do not want to teach music, although I wouldn't mind teaching guitar to students as instrument specific tuition, but this can only make a part time income and if I plan to move in with my girlfriend, it will be very difficult to get students wherever we go, until we are settled down, preferably married.

I have juggled with the idea of hypnotherapy, as for years I have been interested in the mind and have studied hypnotherapy on my own means a bit. I tried psychology, and although the career may be rewarding, the years of study surely aren't and I don't really feel I want to go down that road.

If I did study hypnotherapy however, there is the there is once again the problem of getting clients. And if I moved to another country with my girlfriend, New Zealand, Canada etc...it will be very difficult finding clients, and until the business is well up and running, which could take years, I'd be stuck in small, badly paying, very depressing McDonald style jobs.

Other ideas I have juggled with hypnotherapy were, nutritionist, personal trainer, reiki practitioner, holistic store. All of which however take a lot of time to set up and get running, and are not very profitable.

I currently getting job seekers allowance (the dole) from the government as I have been unemployed for a few months due to two chronic auto immune diseases I have which prevented me from working. I only worked in small grocery stores so far though which brought me to the edge, where I actualy started to feel I was losing it with stress and depression, so I had to quit a few of them.

If I could go abroad and work, in a completely new setting; earn money, be given a place to live by my work whilst earning enough to both save and pay for food etc then I'd be tempted to give that a try for a month or two, but that once again doesn't hold many long term career prospects, and is not somethign I'd do continuously.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Follow your dreams, work hard (the best you can), and you'll be good.

In the end, that is the most important thing, when you are old, and look back on your life, you will not say 'oh I should have done this job, because I would have made more money or been more successful'. I guarantee it.

As they say, it is better to regret the things you HAVE done than the things you HAVEN'T done.I don't have a clue what career I want to go down?
Have you ever considered trying to apply to some retail jobs or customer service jobs? That may be able to help you out until you get on your feet.

Since you have a degree in Music, depending on what instrument you play, you can give people instrument lessons as well. You can post flyers or meet with parents at local parental meetings in schools. Just some ideas for you to look at.

Would you proof read my essay for a college scholarship?

“Why I am a worthy candidate to receive a scholarship and how it will help me achieve my goals”

Why am I a worthy candidate to receive a scholarship? When a grown man of 33 years of age looks in to the future what does he see? Many beautiful houses, kids laughing as they ride there bikes down the street, families leaving on week long vacations, kids telling other kids that their mom is a doctor, and their father well has been layed off or is flipping Big Macs at the local McDonalds. I have a beautiful family, and a loving wife that supports me on the decision to return to college after being gone for 10 years.

My father after graduating from high school enlisted into the United States Navy, and served our country over in Vietnam. My mother after graduating high school started to work for Mr. Ralph Stolle. My parents never had the opportunity to go to college and receive a Degree, and the thought of finally being the first person in my family to receive a degree makes me proud, and would make my family proud. To have a career that my children, my wife and I can be proud of, and not afraid to say “My father or husband is a Medical Laboratory Technician is a proud and goose bump feeling to have.

I am worthy of a scholarship because I work hard for everything I have. I want to be able to support my family during hard economical times. Layoffs from major manufactures only depress, and put a financial burden on the family. I want to be able to do more than flip the big Macs at McDonalds for seven dollars per hour. When I go to a special event or even hang out with new friends sometimes its embarrassing to actually tell them what you do for a living. That is when the bad conscience takes hold and says to me “ Just tell them something like you’re a doctor or some kind of professional!” is what I would say but not all the time. I grew tired of saying that along time ago. Now I’m not getting any older and wiser I need and want to study hard and receive my degree and give back to people and my family what they have been missing from me for the past 15 years.

The scholarship that you are offering will help me to achieve my goals by supplying the money for tuition and books. My finances are wrapped up pretty tight in the web of this economic crunch. Family is very important to me and my wife and kids are all in school and now I want to go to school, work and receive my degree from Edison State Community College in Piqua, Ohio. When I look to the future pass the point of receiving my degree I dream of someday being able to teach other students like myself and give them the knowledge and strength to accomplish their dreams and aspirations just as I will teach and Inspire my children to believe they can accomplish anything they want if they are determined and want to work just a little harder.

This is why I deserve the scholarship and how it will help me achieve my goals.

Do not post a question and then not bother to resolve it yourself, especially when you are asking people to read over an essay, which takes time. Thanks to you, I am never reading any essays on this forum again- you suck and are a terrible writer!

    Wow........

First of all you don't post essays on the Internet someone might steal them.

Second, wow.....Would you proof read my essay for a college scholarship?
I would suggest going to a tutor perhaps to help you with your writing. I know this is not the ideal situation, but honestly, your essay needs a lot of work. Try and see if there is an english or writing tutor in your area, or even at your school. I think the message of your essay is sweet, but the writing really needs a lot of work.

  • Should I study music?

I'm currently a first year uni student studying a Barts, majoring in English text and writing and I am HATING it. I originally wanted to study music at The Sydney Conservatorium of music but was rejected (not because of my music skills but because my admissions rank was not high enough.

One of the proffessors even told me he sympathised with me because he felt that I would have bee "fine" in the course and that my rank was not trully indicative of my capabilities (however student admin rejected me anyway).

So I my back up plan was to study Arts and than apply for transfer next year.

In theory this was a good plan. For one, I performed exceptionally well in English last year however now I am incredibly disinterested in the course and far too cynocal to tolerate some of the sentiments that are inexorably linked to humanitites and arts.

In every lecture and every tutorial all I keep thinking is "music...music...music" but now it's too late. I am considerably jadded and no longer wish to pursue music. Although I love music and NOTHING in the world can make me feel the way music does (I've loved it for as long as I can remember), this doesn't change the fact that a Bmus degree is pretty worthless when you think about it.

I realise now that job prospects would be incredably low with such a degree. To make matters worse I wasn't even going to specialise in performance. I was specialising in composition. Now, a single piece may be played by hundreds of different performers, however it only takes one composer to write hundreds of different pieces. In some respect, investing in a music degee would be a complete gamble.

Now I don't know what to do.

I don't really have any career goals. I really liked biology in highschool but didn't get the marks I needed to pursue any biological derivitory disciplines.

Whats a good career path for me to take?

My future looks bleek at this stage. I'm unemployed and having trouble getting employed (even mcdonalds rejected me) and thats likely due to my limited work experience since all my work experience has been music and music teaching related.

What kinds of degrees or qualifications will make it easier for me to find work?Should I study music?
    hey, maybe a music producer? = )

I love love music as well but I know that it is a gamble

basically anything in the Arts is a gamble, so I'm choosing something that

interests me and might be a good field to go in; computer science xD

I heard college is a place where you find yourself...let it simmer.

maybe you should gamble a little? xD

If you want it go for it, no holds barred.Should I study music?
I must admit I didn't read the question at all. I'm sorry but it was way too long

Give me advice for finding a job in food service?

so i really need a job. im 17 years old. i go to a career tech school for culinary arts and we are currently doing ProStart. that means i need 250 hours of paid work in a food service job. can be anything from mcdonalds to olive garden. ive applied to some places and called back, the places i called pretty much said dont call back, we will call you. my main question is...what would make me stand out on an application? ive done some volunteering with food, have ServeSafe certification, and am pretty experienced compared to some of the people applying for these jobs. sure, its only a two year program, but a lot of people applying to mcdonalds or whatever have no food service experience. what should i write down so it catches the eyes of the employer? and also, is it a big problem that im not 18 and wont be for another 7 months? lots of places in my town serve alcohol since we are a college town. i need this job, and i need it quick. just not sure what im supposed to do to get a job. already applied and called back, nobody has contacted me yet.Give me advice for finding a job in food service?
Frequent the place you want to work Chat with the hostess as you're being seated. DON'T CALL. They are busy and will resent having to talk on the phone. Just make an appearance once a week and check to see if they're hiring yet. Make friends with the people working there. Go in to eat at a 'slow' time so you can chat with your server. Tip good. As you can see, I shortened it-most employers do not want to read a long cover letter. I think it still covers the main idea of what you want to tell them without being overly verbose. Please help with my cover letter?
Sorry but you got the wrong category. Please repost your question under careers.

Can anyone tell what's wrong with me?

Well, this is fairly long: you are forewarned. Anyway, I have consulted with plenty of psychologists and psychiatrists, and they have kept me fairly stable over the years. However, I just haven't felt like anyone has understood me that well. I'm in my early twenties, currently on a leave of absence from college, and basically doing nothing with my life. I did well in high school (4.0 GPA, 1540/1600 SAT), but lost all momentum after it was finished. Honestly, I wasn't ready to make the transition from high school to college. I couldn't figure out where to go, what classes to take, etc. So, I have been on an extended leave ever since. But I still feel like I am inadequately prepared. I feel like I am half my age. I get along better with kids in elementary school than with my peers. I even act like a child at times. It probably doesn't help that I still live with my parents, but the world outside home just seems so complex. I've never been on a date, and don't even know what to say to get one. I don't have many friends either. As far as a career goes, I'm not sure what to do. I have an IQ of 140, so theoretically I am mentally capable of just about anything. But how do you decide on a career if you have myriad academic and technical interests? Again, the amount of options out there makes things so seemingly complicated. I always thought I would be the next Warren Buffett, but I realize that isn't likely. But even though I can make the realization, I have a hard time conjuring a more likely outcome. Real life is made out to be simpler and easier to comprehend than some abstruse textbooks you might find in a university library. For me, however, real life is terribly enigmatic. I don't know how to make friends; I don't have set goals; I don't know what else to do besides staying in the house. I inherited some rental property, so I always have pocket change. And when you do have some funds, working at McDonalds or another low skill/low pay job isn't that appealing. Maybe the inheritance has set me back, making it easy for me to stagnate. Can anyone answer my question, or proffer their advice? Can anyone tell what's wrong with me?
You need drive, not a psychiatrist.

Your life is far to stagnant, there isnt any progress happening

Set yourself a goal, a big one, and go get it. Dont let anyone or anything get in the way of that goal.

Though it may seem complex, life is really very simple, You just have to want whatever it is more than everyone around you.Can anyone tell what's wrong with me?
Deciding on a career is not easy because you have to have a good sense of what you are and how you can contribute to society. For when you go on job interviews, the most common question you'll hear from interviewers is "Tell me about yourself". I can see why you say you don't have set goals. It's hard to set goals when you're facing several forks in the road. For that, I suggest you visit a career counselor.

If you don't know how to make friends, it's probably because you're home most of the time. If you do go to college, you'll have plenty of activities to get involved in. As for "how", friendship usually starts with a smile and greeting.

Good luck! I hope it all works out!

I live in California, will it be easy to find work as a medical assistant here?

and i have another question as a dude think i can find a job? i dont care if the job is stereotypically for women cause its only a career that im doin now so i can have a better paying salary than working at a mcdonalds so i can afford college to become an X-Ray Tech. and besides atleast i'll be surrounded by girls all day. ;)

im becoming one through the Jobcorps experience and im not sure if an employer will see that as legit. but then again im getting the same training as if i went to a heald or western career college.

so any info on pay, finding of a job in cali, and Jobcorps program credibility will be helpful.

thanks alot!I live in California, will it be easy to find work as a medical assistant here?
Yes, you will be able to find employment. I suggest you look for employment at an acute care hospital, or same day surgery center. There will be many different types of jobs that you will qualify for. While you are working you will be able to see all the other possibilities for you to advance your education. I can't comment on the pay because I did this same thing many years ago, and it worked for me. I thought it was one of the smartest things I ever decided to do. You have a lot to look forward to as you climb the ladder of greater knowledge, more responsibility, higher pay, licensed employment. There is so much room for growth.

  • Should I include all of these jobs?

Im redoing my resume and was wondering how many past jobs I should include.

Currently I work at two; a newspaper and a day care

The jobs in my past include two marketing jobs, an elderly care job and mcdonalds.

I didnt work long at the elderly job and McDonalds I worked for 5 years and thought that would show Im a long term worker.

My career field is Journalism/PR and Advertising so I thought marketing would help that

Some of the jobs I am applying for are general office jobs.

Id like to keep the resume only a page and a half.

Any suggestions? Thanks!Should I include all of these jobs?
Keep your resume to 1 page. Also, create a functional resume instead of a chronological one; that way you can highlight those things that you have experience in for your new career. For example, employers want people who have great team experience. Your work at McDonalds gave you that. So, you would write, Strong background as a team player in a fast paced environment working with a diverse population.

A functional resume will also let you group the 'like' things together; flexible working schedule, great attendance, etc. without giving so much attention to the length of time you were on each job.

    Hope this helps.
