Are Art Degrees really as bad for job prospects as people say they are?

I really like drawing and Art, but I hear many people saying if i studied Art at Degree level you will end up flipping burgers in Mcdonalds. Is this true? will I actually end up in just as bad a situation job wise, as i am now?? I mean I want to go do an Art Degree of some kind at University because I really enjoy Art, but If my career prospects are going to be useless, then why should i bother going? Usually, those with HE qualifications in science, medicine, engineering, and technology earn much more than those with arts-based or human sciences qualifications. This is largely due to the fact that a growing economy relies heavily on people with such skills, as they make-up the country's technological infrastructure.



Art is often thought of as something that the economy seeks when times are good and there's money to spare - Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and arts graduates have little or no other skills that can help then compete effectively in the modern economy.



Loving art, music, drawing, acting..etc.. is all very well and is a great thing to do - but probably as a hobby or something secondary. But as a degree course, I would say it's not a great option.





Having said all that, I remember what my father once told me: " A good artist is better than a hundred rubbish engineers " - So remember that you need to specialise in something that you like, but also something that can actually pay the gas bill at the end of the month! - It's not an easy decision.

It is a bit difficult to manage with just a degree in Arts. However, if you are planning for a good career and you are not confident that you will be able to make it big through your love of Arts, the best thing you can do is take up a major in a good programme and minor in Arts. I am not sure if such a facility is available in the Univ you would like to go to. But this way you can still take up subjects of your choice.Are Art Degrees really as bad for job prospects as people say they are?
Theoretically, that may be the case in today's "modern" world but I think it also depends on other factors, maybe even more important, like how hardworking you are, your extra-curricular activities, etc.



How you will perform at university regardless of your degree is also another important thing. If studying an art degree will help you to be more motivated, then why not?
