Very high unemployment for recent college grads. Why?

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/bu鈥?/a>

I graduated with bachelor of science in mathematics during May 2008. After 4 to 6 month of furious job hunting for an entry level position I am still unemployed. So are all my friends who graduated with me. I have a friend who got his BS in math with 3.55 GPA and a second friend who got BS in finance with 3.7 GPA. Yet they are unemployed too!

I know some of you will say, "work in mcdonalds or walmart. thats a job too"

The problem with this above statement is that you have spent 5 long years studying very hard and paying around $50,000 altogether to earn your bachelors. What is the point of spending this much time, effort and money if you have to work at mcdonalds or walmart?

working at mcdonalds or walmart could have been done without ever going to university too.

So then what is the point of university nowadays if it does not provide you a career after graduation? What do Mccain and Obama have to say about this?Very high unemployment for recent college grads. Why?
Because ... Young, recent graduates feel like high paying jobs are supposed to land in their laps !! ... What ever happened to working and proving your worth into better positions ??

ALL Americans should READ Obama's Global Poverty Act (S.2433) ... He is wanting to give America's sovereignty over to the United Nations !!!

Alaska Govermor Sarah Palin has MORE TOTAL political experience than Obama!!

Most companies don't want to give you the pay for your degree, bottom line.

Join the military for four years; get the military experience under your belt; with that and your degree you have a much higher opportunity to get the job.

I am in the same boat...and I graduated in 2007, and cannot find a job to save my life..so all I can say is just read up on both of the canidates issues and see which one fits more into youre value system.I personally would suggest Obama though!Very high unemployment for recent college grads. Why?
The economy is in the tank and no one wants to admit it. As for math majors, get a single subject and teach for a while, that is a valuable credential.
trust me, you'll be fine. it happens very often with graduates, and about mccain and obama, i'm sure mccain never talked about education and students , but i'm very much sure obama does. Very high unemployment for recent college grads. Why?
What college did you attend that didn't have a job placement program? I had a job lined up two months before I graduated college.
I cant find a job either and I went to a top 100 school. I got an interview on tuesday but its been a few months since I been out of school.
If you aint rich McCain doesnt care about you...

obama want to creat more jobs here and he wants to help pay off student loans..

Vote Obama '08
My guess would be because you're either not looking hard enough... or there aren't as many jobs as people like to think there are.
I too graduated in may 2008. Our professors told us we'd have a hard time because of the recession. Try looking in Texas, but dont give up.
I say become a teacher.
I don't think colleges stress enough what the work environment is looking for in an employee. They bring you end, take your money, usually have some undergrad teaching the class. Give you a diploma and send you on your way.

Trade schools, or technical colleges have a higher placement rate and usually make more money.

The most successful people I've met finished their degrees while working and had the company pay for them.

Also you cannot have any charges related to violence on your record. And I mean none.

Violence in the work place is the #1 killer of people at work in all professions. Industry knows it, so if you've had an arrest for being in a fight, then good luck finding a job. If you've ever been reported for stalking or restraining order. Bad juju.

There are so many ways for people to get degrees (even though half of them are not legit) that degrees dont mean as much as they used to. It really helps to know the right people in this world (which can really suck if you don't!) But don't feel like you wasted your time/money because you didn't. Unemployment is going everywhere, even for people who do not have degrees! Check with your college to see if they have employment placement services (they should) and if that leads to nowhere, check out local newspapers daily, websites, and put out the word to everybody you see and/or meet that you are looking for a career.
The point of university is to go to and get a better education, to be able to expand your career, and get the proper information needed to survive in the outside world.

In regards to not getting a job, it is just this time in world where the economy isnt doing too well, hence unemployment rising.

Also the fact that you were doing that particular degree might of also contributed, as there might not be much demand in your area.

That is why it is really important to go to university to do a course in which there is high demand for.

I suggest you either do another course which may involve elements of the course uve done, though is much more in demand, or move somewhere. work isnt going to find you. or go to another state.

there's so much that an leader can do. as it is a free market economy, ultimately businesses decide where to start up, not the govt.

hope that helps :-)
People are not granted a job just because they have a college degree. You seem to have a sense of entitlement.

Perhaps your expectation are higher than the market will bear.

"Median annual earnings of mathematicians were $86,930 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $62,970 and $106,250. The lowest 10 percent had earnings of less than $43,500, while the highest 10 percent earned more than $132,190.

Job prospects. Job competition will remain keen because employment in this occupation is relatively small and few new jobs are expected. Master鈥檚 degree and Ph.D. holders with a strong background in mathematics and a related discipline, such as engineering or computer science, and who apply mathematical theory to real-world problems will have the best job prospects in related occupations.

My advice to you learn a trade to supplement your job marketability.

You sound to proud to start at the bottom.
there is your flaw. you are too good to work your way up. it doesn't matter where you start as long as you work hard, have a good attitude and are reliable .. you will have a job no matter what the pay.

i went to a great university here in the south and if i say the college... everyone has said, wow you must be smart. Okay, yes... but when I graduated, times were tough, too. but I took temp jobs to start off and i was hired on by the 2nd assignment because i proved myself. I was not able to let it go pass me. there are times I wish i didn't turn down the jobs i thought i was too qualified for ..because I may actually be further up the ladder than i am now. I have great project experience but i don't have actual administrative experience and sometimes it hurts when i go for the higher up jobs against those with the administrative exper that I thought i was too qualified to even do.
