Career advice needed (Class of 2010, Unemployed)?

I graduated last May with a Master's degree in petroleum geology (think BP/Exxon). When I started grad school, demand was through the roof. Many grads had multiple offers of $80-100k. Now it's very different.

I started applying nearly a year ago. I've had several interview, but no offers. At this point I've given up looking for anything remotely related to what I studied as there are no jobs/way too many applicants.

I am applying for almost anything. Now Target, yes Target, informs me that I'm "not qualified" for a minimum wage, part time job. WTF?!?

McDonalds, Walmart, Target, etc. won't even offer me a job. What am I supposed to do? Live at home with my parents for the rest of my life shooting resumes/cover letters into the black hole of the internet? This isn't what I wanted. All I want is a job. Is that really asking so much?

Any career advice would be welcome. Thanks.Career advice needed (Class of 2010, Unemployed)?
This is America -- land of the free and home of the brave. It's also the land of opportunity. Recall that immigrants came to America to MAKE THEIR OWN LIVES.

1. Start your own business.

2. Pave your own path.

STOP WHINING.Career advice needed (Class of 2010, Unemployed)?
I say just keep trying. I am still in high school, but I was never offered a job for about the first year I was looking. I just kept applying. Eventually my friend found out that where he worked, they were hiring. The managers thought he was a good worker, and since i knew him they gave me a chance. If you have friends that can put in a few good words fro you, you might get a job. I felt like you do, I am an honors student with a great attendance record ,taking ap classes, and volunteering for my schools national honors society. I got turned down for many jobs that i believe i was qualified for.Career advice needed (Class of 2010, Unemployed)?
Jenny,

You didn't mention how your grades were during college. The cruel fact is that plays a very important role in who gets job offers and who doesn't even when there is demand for college graduates. With the downturn in the economy during 2009 most of us were just happy to hang on to our jobs and many companies backed off of college recruiting altogether. At least one oil %26amp; gas producing company reneged on job offers to college grads which was horrible.

Oil %26amp; gas activity has picked up during 2010 overall and also job opportunities. However, I'm not as familiar with Petroleum Geology demand as I am for Engineering and many companies are still limiting the number of new hires they are allowed. I can state that there is still a large shortage of both Petroleum Engineers and Earth Scientists within this industry and that gap will continue to grow as most of us retire in the next 5 - 10 years.

I work for a major US producing company. If you are interested contact me and I would be glad to pass your resume to my company's various Earth Science departments. No promises but it is much better than trying to work through Human Resources.
