I've taken apptitude tests, but nothing gets me any closer to deciding. The results are always the same. Some are most artsy/creative (Costume designer, website designer, interior designer), but then theres things like psychologist, child and youth worker. And of course, my dream jobs are up there like musician. I mean, I guess the results are pretty accurate to my interests, but there's no way I'm getting into university (college at best) and, sure, I like to draw, sing, play guitar, all that stuff, but let's be realistic, there are a zillion people better than me. Any suggestions for other jobs I might be interested in that don't require any education higher than college? Thanks in advance. And please don't be all like 'Oh no, you don't need to decide now.' People told me that my whole life and look where that got me? If I don't decide soon, the only career available to me is gonna be McDonalds cashier.I'm not sure what kind of career I want?
Firstly, I have two books you should look at...most libraries have them. They are:
"What color is my parachute?" by Richard Bolles. It's updated every year, and is basically the classic on career/job hunting.
Another good one is "Do What You Are" by Paul Tieger and Barbara Barron. This one is cool in that it helps you find great career ideas based on your personality type.
And now for the very important bit...it doesn't matter! The average person changes careers anywhere from NINE to ELEVEN times!
So to start with, pick something you like. It's not a lifelong sentence! If your passion is costume design, go for it! It doesn't matter if there are those better than you...they had to work hard to get there, and you can do exactly the same. There is no 'safe' degree with a guaranteed job and great income attached. Times are tough everywhere and for everyone. Start with something you'll enjoy and go from there, because all you can do is your best. Good luck! :)I'm not sure what kind of career I want?
What do you really want to do? I think that's the place to start. And don't think you can't get into college. I mean, if you really want to be a psychologist, for example, then you would really have to go and get a degree.
The fact is, it's a competitive world out there, and unless you have talent / education / experience plus determination... it will be very hard to achive your dream job.
