JOB SEEKERS ALLOWANCE?

Hi,

I recently turned 16 and have been eagerly applying everywhere that is advertising for staff (even the places that aren't!) I've always wanted a job, ever since the age of like... 10

I've applied at all the major supermarkets in my area, and also up to 10 miles away (I AM WILLING TO TRAVEL TO GET WORK!), I've even applied in Mcdonalds, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut and Dominos.

I have recieved a letter from tesco, saying I was unsuccessful and wasn't getting an interview. Another tesco gave me the opportunity to have an interview but I was a little nervous and didn't really do my best!

I haven't heard back from all the other places I've applied for! I've signed up to S1 Jobs, Careers Scotland, and also some other job sites.

Because I'm now 16, my mum doesn't get Family Allowance money anymore, and she's struggling with bills (and DEBT!) - I hate asking her for money, even if it is just 拢1 for my bus fares so I called into Careers Scotland and asked if there was any benefits (mind you, not that I was too happy about the idea) available to me. They said I would be entitled to JSA seeing how I am now 16 and actively seeking work.

I went to the Job Centre for my appointment and had a meeting with a man who seemed very rude, didn't seem to be really helpful. He told me that I needed to wait until after 18th October until I was able to claim!

This doesn't sound right, at the age of 16 and i'm looking for work, isn't that what JSA is for? People looking for work?...

My friend, who turned 16 on June 24th (One month exactly before me) managed to get money at end of June, early august (how's this?!)

Is there anything I can do, I'm desperate for money to renew bus pass also x-mas is coming up (I need to travel a fair distance to see family etc.)

I'm really getting down in the dumps trying to get a job! I would at least like a notification letter saying "Thanks for your application" but I'm being blatantly ignored.

Also, the job centre saying I'm not entitled to anything - what If I was about to be kicked out for not paying dig money? (Not the case here, but I'm sure it happens..)

Thanks to anyone who can help :)JOB SEEKERS ALLOWANCE?
At 16, you can only claim Jobseeker's Allowance in exceptional circumstances. Ordinarily, you have to wait until you are 18 before you can receive JSA. So Careers Scotland have been erroneous with the information they have given you.

The adviser at the job centre has also acted inappropriately toward you. As a 16 year old, there are guidelines that should be adhered to in dealing with you, as under eighteens are classed as a vulnerable group.

The circumstances under which you can claim are:

1) Your parents are unable to support you financially, and you would be placed at risk if benefit is not paid:

2) You are no longer living with your parents, are unable to return, and are unable to be supported where you are living;

3) You are a member of a couple responsible for a child;

4) You are a single parent.

Obviously, the circumstance you are most likely to fall into is the first one. However, for a 20 week period following you leaving school, you enter into a Child Benefit Extension Period. This is when the Child Benefit your parents receive stops, but they can extend it if you are out of work, but registered for work and training with Connexions or the Careers Office. If you return to full time education, then Child Benefit can be paid up until you turn 19 if you remain in full time education.

So if you are living at home, you won't be able to apply for JSA until the end of the Child Benefit Extension Period. Your parents need to apply for this by contacting Child Benefit. When that ends, then you will need to return to the Jobcentre, where you will have an interview with an adviser who specialises in under eighteen claims. A decision will then be made, dependant on your circumstances, as to whether you can be paid JSA before you turn 18. Only advisers who have had the relevant training, and authorisation, can make decisions on under eighteens.

Good luck, and I hope you find work soon.

I applied early this year and I gave my details and filled out forms, etc, and I got my money within 3-4 weeks. I would speak to somebody else within your local job centre and get it sorted.

Hope this helps! : )

how did your friend get job seekers allowence you have to be 18 yrs of age... thats why the job centre is saying your not entitled... so your freind either lied about having the money or lied about her age. if you keep going bk your just keep getting refused they will help you find a job but they wont give you any money till your 18.
